Signal controlled bicycle crossing

Projects: Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering

Bicycle Network Planning:

HHO Africa undertook the first Bicycle Demonstration Project in South Africa. The objective was to locate, design and implement a system of cycle paths and facilities in the study area of the Cape Town southern suburbs.

Among the features of the project were:

Extensive initial research to establish the project feasibility
The preparation of a National Manual for the Planning and Design of Bicycle Facilities in Urban Areas
Extensive school surveys in the study area to determine travel desire lines, attitudes of scholar commuters, and existing and potential bicycle demand.
Detailed planning considered geometric details, choice of surface, development of special road signs and traffic signals, design of short and long term bicycle parking facilities
Implementation of the system in the study area and regular monitoring to establish actual levels of use and identify problem areas
Minor modification and major extensions to the system to meet demand

The project won the SAICE Regional Award for Excellence in Engineering.

The successful implementation of the project has led to HHO being appointed to design further bicycle networks in Cape Town and also for other urban authorities around the country.
