Freeway and Rural Highway Service Areas South Africa:
The need to provide high quality service areas at strategic locations along the major intercity highway network was first identified by the Shell Oil Company of South Africa. The areas would provide the travelling motorist and the trucking industry with convenient stops for refuelling, meals, convenience shopping facilities and safe overnight truck parking.
HHO Africa worked with Shell on the development of the service areas from inception of the project known as the Ultra City concept. HHO Africa designed all the infrastructure for the first such Ultra City at Estcourt on the N3 highway between Johannesburg and Durban and were subsequently responsible for several other service areas. Design responsibilities included :
Design of the approach roads and parking areas |
Negotiations with the relevant Highway Authorities for approval of these innovative developments and agreement of design standards |
Design of all the services infrastructure including location of water sources in remote areas and waste water treatment facilities |
Contract documentation and supervision of construction |
