Reconstruction of Sea Point Swimming Pool Cape Town South Africa:
For many years the Sea Point swimming pool with its associated wading and paddling pools for the children has bee a popular summer venue for the people of Sea Point and Cape Town. The severe marine environment and the use of salt water in the pool led to serious deterioration in the structural condition of the pool and the surrounding facilities.
In 1992 HHO Africa were appointed to investigate and the report on the condition of the service tunnel around the pool. In the light of the findings of the report the Cape Town City Council decided to reconstruct the whole facility. The decision coincided with the Cape Town bid for the 2004 Olympic Games and it was decided ton upgrade the facility to Olympic standards while retaining the recreational value of the complex. HHO Africa carried out all the structural design and supervised the construction.
Several innovative features were adopted in the planning and design:
A diving pool was added and for control purposes the top water level in the four pools was made the same |
Existing pool floors were used as foundations for the new structures |
The existing diving platform was raised as a unit to save cost and meet Olympic standards |
The latest technology was used in the concrete design to resist marine attack and all reinforcement was galvanised |
Construction had to take account of the proximity of the sea where wave splash presented significant risks |
