Railway Civil Engineering

Railways form an integral part of the transportation mix of countries around the world. At HHO we believe that Railway Engineering is fundamental to public transport and therefore integral to the relief of road-based congestion.

Each project we handle is approached in a holistic manner with the skills and knowledge gained over decades of engineering excellence. Multiple award winning projects are a testimony to this fact. The team at HHO, along with their selected partners in the fields of electrical and mechanical engineering, handles projects ranging from the High-Speed Gautrain and conventional freight and commuter rail lines to light rail in an urban context.

  • Rail feasibility studies including assessing freight/passenger demand
  • Station design including integration of rail with other transport modes, e.g. road based public transport
  • Railway track alignment and design
  • Earthworks design
  • Railway pavement design
  • Drainage design
  • Rail safety audits

Pretoria Gautrain Link, Gauteng, South Africa

HHO was involved in the preliminary design of two portions of project and the detailed design of the Pretoria – Hatfield portion, which is 8km long, but includes a total length of 1.5km of structure, made up of 3 viaducts (longest 389m), 3 fly-overs and 12 bridge structures. Five PRASA stations were also upgraded.

Langa Mutual Chempet Rail Link, Cape Town, South Africa

This new rail link between the Cape Flats and Atlantis railway lines was designed to make the rail network more resilient by improving linkages between origins and destinations. Location of stations were chosen to maximise ridership potential and to use the project to stimulate development in Wingfield.

N3 Cato Ridge Rail, KZN, South Africa

To facilitate the N3 freeway upgrade and widening, the realignment of 2km of rail line and provision of a new rail bridge alongside the existing Cato Ridge Railway bridge is required, and is being designed by HHO, as the existing bridge span is inadequate.
